Privacy Policy

Effective [EFFECTIVE DATE] · Lay of the Land is run by Thomas Jeanne Enterprises LLC.

The short version. We don't have accounts, we don't sell or share your information for advertising, and we don't track you across other sites or apps. To build a report we send the place you searched to the public data sources listed below. We never store your IP address.

What you give us

We don't ask for your name, email, phone number or payment details. [When saved trips, sharing or purchases are added, update this section: App Store purchases are handled by Apple.]

How a report is built

To answer your search, our servers send the place (as an address or map coordinates) and, where needed, your dates to public and commercial data services: weather, maps, hazards, parks, air quality, gas prices, events and others. Each one is listed on the data credits page. Those services receive the request from our servers, not from your device, and handle it under their own privacy policies.

If you enter a job site for a business trip, we look it up the same way as the place you're staying (a map service turns it into coordinates) and ask a routing service for the drive between the two. Your other trip settings and who's coming change how the report is put together on our side. We don't send them to those services.

What we keep, and for how long

WhatWhyHow long
Lookups in a shared cache: the request we sent to a data service (which includes the place searched, or a job site you entered) and its answer. For registered-offender data we keep only the computed counts, never the records themselves. So the next person asking about the same area gets a fast answer and we stay within free limits. Not linked to you, your device or your IP address.30 minutes to 30 days, depending on the source
A daily count of reports per visitor, stored under a one-way scrambled code (a hash of the date and your IP address). The IP address itself is never stored. To stop abuse: about 40 reports a day per visitorUp to 30 days. If our database is briefly unavailable, the count is kept in our server's memory instead and lasts at most until the end of the day.
A copy of your report in your own browser (not on our servers or any shared cache)So reopening the page doesn't rebuild it5 minutes; upgraded reports aren't kept
Totals of which report sections worked or failed each dayTo spot broken data sources30 days; counts only, no places or visitors
Error logs from our servers, which can include the place being looked upTo fix problemsA short time, kept by our hosting provider

The one-page summary you save or print stays on your device.

Service providers

We don't use advertising networks or third-party analytics, and we don't sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Sensitive information in reports

Reports can include public records such as registered-offender counts (traveler upgrade) and reported crime totals. We show counts and totals only; names, photos and addresses of individuals are never stored or shown.

Children

Lay of the Land is for adults planning trips and isn't directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect information from children. "Kids" in a report means you told us children are traveling with you; it's used only to pick things to do.

Your choices and rights

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. Big changes, like adding accounts, will be called out in the app.
